Obong of Calabar
Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V

On Saturday, October 24, 2015, the Obong of Calabar Executive Forum (OCEF) in conjunction with her Education Committee, awarded scholarship to some twenty Efik sons and daughters pooled from the twelve ancestral clans of the kingdom and spread across various disciplines in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Below is a list of some of the beneficiaries.

  1. Efiom Edet Okon; a second year student of Civil Engineering at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  2. Bassey Bassey Okon; a third year student of Computer Science at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  3. Obo Efiom Ofiong; a fourth year student of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Calabar
  4. O’dywayar Willoughby Efa; a second year student of Wood Product Engineering at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  5. Bassey Bassey  Asuquo;  a second year student of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka
  6. Ekpa Abasi Eneobong; a third year student of Basic Accounting at the University of Calabar
  7. Afiong Eyo Asuquo; a second year student of Health Information Management at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar
  8. Etim Edwin Okon; a second year student of Civil Engineering at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  9. Ekpenyong Nkpo Ndiyo; a third year student of Mathematics at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  10. Antigha Okon Ita; a second year student of Education Political Science at the University of Calabar
  11. Charles Ukpong Esien; a third year student of Agriculture at the University of Calabar
  12. Endurance Itam Ekpe Oku; a third year student of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Calabar
  13. Anwakang Esuong Amang; a second year student of Education at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  14. Grace Aloysius Ekong; a third year student of Mathematics at the Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH)
  15. Asuquo Elijah Bassey; a third year student of Agriculture at the University of Calabar

The occasion was graced by The Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, KSM; Natural Ruler Treaty King and Grand patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, and flooded with speeches from education icons of Efik extraction including;

  1. Prof. Ofiong Efanga Ofiong, former Commissioner for Education, Cross River State and Chairman, Education Committee of the Royal Court of the Obong of Calabar (OCEF)
  2. Lady Prof. (Mrs.) Roibito Ekpiken-Ekanem, KSJI, Vice-Chairman, Education Committee, OCEF
  3. High Chief Dr. Asuquo Ekpenyong, OON; a foremost Efik business mogul and Chairman, OCEF

Also present at the occasion were

As expected, the occasion featured beautiful cultural displays like Abang Awa and odu-okut-obuk. Abang Awa is an old deital dance only performed by true blood descendants of the Efik kingdom. Odu-okut-obuk is a beautiful maiden dance that is performed at odd times, especially when people are too tired to see an occasion to the end, hence the name. High Chief Dr. Asuquo Ekpenyong, OON, informed the gathering that the award will continue and that the number of beneficiaries will increase by a proportion of 25% each year until all Efik sons and daughters who demonstrate academic excellence in their different fields of study are taken care of.
